The Night After the Return by MrsHorowietzky The Night After the Return by MrsHorowietzky
Done for a contest at HQ-Holmes .
Inspired by the scene in the Granada-filming of The empty House where Watson shows Holmes the letter from Reichenbach (which he did let frame) and calls it "my most valuable possession". I imagine Holmes had quite a bit of thinking to do the following night -- and Watson, not able to sleep either, surprises him contemplating the letter.
Whew, that was really almost last minute. :D

Awww, it's very touching. Holmes's face is amazing  Such heartbreak and love. I am also loving the Granada background.

(Hehe, bweheh. From the thumbnail at first glance it looked a bit like he was playing the piano XD)

I'm sure he could play a few tunes on it, being musically trained and all ;-)

This is beautiful!  You've motivated me to go and watch the Granada episode, which I will do shortly.

Can I favorite this more than once? Like, a hundred times might do it.

This is so wonderful, for so many reasons. First of all, I love your style as usual; that candle flame is such a small detail, but I just think it's really appealing. And speaking of details, I could spend hours locating all the minutiae you put in the background. Detailed backgrounds are a favored technique for me, it adds a lot of interest. Holmes's and Watson's expressions - Holmes brooding, even vulnerable, and Watson concerned and perhaps a bit tired - are spot-on. The coloring and lighting add so much to the mood as well.

It's my theory (developed via the help of some brilliant fellow Doyle readers) that Watson's written version of "The Empty House" (Doyle's story, basically) is just a cover-up to hide what really happened. As kind and magnanimous as Watson is, I don't think he could faint and have all forgiven. I believe he and Holmes had a much more emotional reunion, and Watson chose not to write the actual account - perhaps for safety reasons for Holmes, or perhaps to save Holmes the embarrassment of letting his readers know more about his humanity.

I really want to write a fan fiction based on your picture now... if I can find the time (February is always a horrendous month for me), would you indulge me?

Darling, your magnificent reaction left me quite speechless, therefore I saw myself unable to reply to it until now. And I am still so flattered and touched and feel like hugging you right now, very tightly. :forgiveme: I hope you'll forgive my apparent indifference; it was the exact contrary, namely sheer overwhelmed-ness by your kindness. I am so flattered. Weeeeeeeh!
Thank you so much for all your compliments, speaking about the details, I am glad they entertain you, I also love pictures with much detail, and have fun including them in my own drawings, but you know, I hadn't enough time to add quite as much detail in this one as I liked.. sadly. But as I said, good to know you enjoy them all the same. And it makes me happy how you read their expressions -- it confirms they convey everything I wanted them to show. Thank you!!
I absolutely agree with what you said about the Empty House.... I am absolutely convinced their reunion was much more dramatic. Until the part where Watson faints it is perfectly realistic, but after Watson wakes up from his faint, I am SO SURE he was grabbing Holmes and hugging him until he would faint in turn for lack of air. Not just grabbing Holmes' shoulders-old chap here you are-yes Watson let's capture some corrupt shikaris. Holmes may have been enough distracted by his overwhelming emotions to restrain himself. But Watson? No. Ridiculous notion. He would hug and cling and sob and then Holmes would have a seriously hard time to remain his former self. And yes, I also believe Watson wouldn't have forgiven him so easily. After the first days of joy and incredulity, the realisation of what Holmes has actually done would strike him. Then, a situation in which he witnesses that his friend is also severely troubled by this whole business (which I tried to show in the above work) might prove essential. ;-; So yes, "The Empty House" sounds very much like an omitting cover and much incomplete.

Girl. You. Writing. A. Fanfiction. Based on. My. Drawing. It is hard to describe my embarrassment (in a positive sense) and joy and gaping when I read this. THANK YOU!!! That would be so lovely! I don't know if you're still in the mood for that, but if you admirable literary phenomenon would do that, I would print the result out and hang it on my wall so I can see it and think "The wonderful skitskitpotter has written a fanfiction based on my picture. *admires*" And knowing you, I know the result would be one of the best, most intense and deepest canon/Granada-fanfics on the entire internet. I hope you find the motivation and time to do it. If I would indulge you? My dear friend, I give you every hour you need for it and would gladly shower you with the best chocolate if I could.

Please do forgive me my late answer, it is a shame I tell you all this only now, but.. you know. Stunned, my dear. THANK YOU AGAIN. SO MUCH!

Ahhhhhhh this is so beautiful! I love that scene in The Empty House (Holmes' expression in that scene is perfect, he doesn't know what to say because, really, what could he say?), and I wondered if something like this happened afterwards. And here it is! In a picture! :iconloveloveplz:
Also, dang it, my sister managed to notice the similarities between this and White Agony Creek before I did and I re-read that one two days ago.
...By the way, "Nelly" is Goldie's name in Germany, am I correct? ;D

Ahhhhhhh, happy to provide! :woohoo: I also love this scene in the episode, that was the moment when I burst out squeeing when I watched it for the first time (ok ok.. I still squee)!

Oh God, yes it is! :iconsweatdropplz: You know what dedication Don Rosa wrote on a very magnificent drawing he did for me? "For glittering Nelly" Isn't that amusing and sweet? :D

Me and Dolly were clutching our hearts and reaching for the screen like :iconcomebackplz: "...Watsonnnnnnn!"

Wah, that's so cute! I've only met him once, and it still bothers me that I couldn't manage to say anything clever to him. ENGLISH. YOU FAILED ME.

Yes, you sit there with one half of your face happily smiling and the other crying.  ;___;

Ehh, I know what you mean. I wrote him a letter when I went to my first meeting because I knew exactly I wouldn't be able to utter one sensible word... but my English in the letter wasn't exactly admirable, either. ^^; Until the most recent meeting my English got light years better, but I forgot most of my vocabulary and all of the pronounciation when the Legend got in sight.

Awww, this is adorable!
I love the calm mood in this and that night sky in the frames!

Hahaha, this reminds me the scene from "The Prisoner of White Agony Creek" where's Scrooge is looking at Glittering's hair tuft.

BINGO, I didn't mention it beforehand because I was curious if anyone would spot the similarity, hehe, I had to snicker a lot when I remarked while sketching this that it is in fact very much like this scene with Scrooge and Goldie. :iconyahoogrinplz:

wow... that is so beautiful. And it brings bitter sweet tears to my eyes. :happycry: As always I really enjoy the skin tone and hair color you chose. and Holmes is looking very Brettish and Watson very Hardwickeish so that is awesome :) I say a thousend congratulations for this drawing. it is a very emotional piece, much more gentle and somber then many of your drawings. I really like the expression in Holmes' eyes, he looks like he almost might be about ready to cry. (also, I'm curious, you signed it Nelly. is that your name? pardon me if that is a bad question to ask)

Thank you so much! :glomp:

I am glad it seems so very emotional to you, I was hoping to succeed with conveying at least a bit of the many emotions of The empty House. :blushes:

And I am even more glad to read Holmes seems to you like he might be about to cry. He most certainly would have almost cried that night when it slowly dawns upon him how much he means to his friend and much horrific this deception must really have been for him.

And eh ehehehehehe, time for an incognito signature it seems. XDD

You are most welcome my dear! I think you got the emotions spot on!

Yes... I'm sure it took Holmes a little while even then to really realize just how much he meant to Watson and how badly he hurt him.

(oh my gosh! so that is really your name? SO CUTEEEEE! I love it!!!!!)
